The flood of reality shows that popped up in the last decade has left TV audiences wondering just how much is real and how much is staged for entertainment.
But this season, southern New Jersey viewers got to enjoy one show for just how real it was. “School of Surf,” on MTV2, documented two high school surf teams in their daily lives, as well as their trials in surfing the Red Bull Riders Cup to the national championships last spring.
One of the high school teams was Malibu, the iconic Southern California surf town. The other was Cape May County’s Ocean City.
“We weren’t really sure how big it was going to be or how people would respond,” said Chris Kelly, who graduated last June and is now taking online courses at Atlantic Cape Community College and pursuing a semi-pro surfing career, “but locally everyone is pretty pumped.”
